Hello from Somerset
#1
Hello. My name is Bill and I have just bought a 1956 Velox, 50 years after owning a Wyvern from my father. I live in Somerset and I am busy already trying to get it fully up to speed. I am busy chasing an air leak to the carb which is causing some hesitant running at mid throttle. Any suggestions gratefully received! I bought a new carb from the Carburettor Hospital and they are great. Gaskets are a bit of a problem as are most spares. Thanks to the internet it is much easier to hunt things. I will let you know how the refurbishment goes. Wink

Hi Bill I run a 1946 J14 with what sounds like a similar problem, runs fine on a gentle throttle or on a full throttle but hesitates on mid throttle. Where is the carburettor hospital ?  I think mine leaks around the butterfly linkage as there is play

Thanks guys. I don't know if Zenith ever made a decent carb. I have an A35 in addition to the Velox and after months of trying to sort the same problem out with the Zenith on that went to SU. Never looked back. Has anyone ever put an SU on a Velox?

Hello again Bill,
I have had numerous problems with my carb, I would recommend that you purchase a rebuild pack, quite a reasonable price which comes with gaskets and especially the economy diaphragm which tend to go brittle and cause rich running, quite easy to do, also check the mating surface of the carb body to the inlet for true, as they tend to bend if carelessly bolted down. Otherwise they work well with the car.
It would help if you described in more detail what is wrong. Have you done a vacuum check?

There was a recognised performance upgrade used by Vauxhall utilising twin SUs but honestly the Zenith carbs are perfectly OK if they are serviced as Les suggests.

Thanks gents. The current situation is that I have bought a brand new carb from the carb hospital. They had a couple of re-furbished ones on the shelf as well as this one. Cost £300 but I think it was worth it. I have replaced all the manifold and insulating block gaskets, and it runs much better. The next thing is a compression test. What do you mean by a vacuum check Bish? Regards,  Bill

Check online for explanation of Vacuum test, you might find a square headed bolt on your inlet manifold normally to the right of the carb to fit a gauge https://www.hemmings.com/magazine/hsx/20...09071.html
